-A/C to MOT e-of a molecular species lie in molecular orbitals.These molecular orbitals are associated with those nuclie which have been involved in the formation of a molecular.
FORMATION OF MOLECULAR ORBITALS:
-Molecular orbitals are formed by liner combination of atomic orbitals i.e. no. of m.o. formed will be equal to no.of atomic orbitals involved in their formation.
CONDITION;
(i). In homonuclear diatomic molecular species combining atomic orbital must be of same energy level.However,In hetronuclear diatomic molecular species combindingo atomic orbital should be of comparable energy level.
(ii). Combining atomic orbital must be in same phase and phase diff.will be a so that max.constructive overlapping can occur and probability of finding shared e should be max.between both nuclie.
(iii). Combining atomic orbital must have same symm.w.r.t inter nuclear axis.
Formation Of Diff. Types Of Molecular Orbitals:
MOS: They are formed by axial overlapping of following combinations of atomic orbital.
(s+s),(p+p),(s+p),(b+d),(d+d).
-They are formed by sidewise overlapping of four lobes of one d-orbital with four lobes of other same d-orbital,hence mos are formed by combinations.
- n-bond is formed in compounds of transition metal. Specially in metallic clusters.
